What is a Digital Signature Certificate?
A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is the electronic equivalent of a handwritten signature, issued by a Certifying Authority (CA) licensed by the CCA. It binds a person identity to a cryptographic key pair used to sign documents digitally.
Why only Class-3 matters now
Since 2021, the CCA has consolidated to Class-3 for most use cases. Class-1 and Class-2 have been phased out.
- Class-3 DSC: highest security — issued after in-person or video verification. Used for MCA filings, GST, IT returns, e-tenders, EPFO, ICEGATE, trademark filings, DGFT.
- Document Signer Certificate: used by organisations to programmatically sign PDFs at scale.
